“lead to”? A progressive tax system *is* socialism, even if just a mild form of it.

No . . . most Americans are quite happy to pay into a joint pool based on ability to pay . . . it’s what the taxes will be used for that’s the problem . . . increasing tax rates to pay for expanded social programs is frowned upon by some people

  2. MeHoo says:

WE have a progressive tax system. Always have.

It’s just a matter of who pays how much. Bush cut taxes dramatically for the wealthy. Obama would roll back some of those cuts, while giving cuts to the middle class.

Since we’ve had a progressive tax system for many years now I suppose we’re already a socialist country so we might as well not argue about it anymore.

not all Americans. but mccain supporters do, the same people who mostly make less than than 250K. Ironic.

actually americans know that we already have a progressive tax system and for some reason liberals keep saying its not enough. So until they tell us when it is enough Ill continue to assume the goal is total socialism. Seems like a fair trade in that it puts the honus on the liberals to state their intentions.

AMERICANS BELIEVE WHAT THEY ARE TOLD. THEY ARE NOT ABLE TO THINK FOR THEM SELF THEY DON’T HAVE A CLUE WHAT IS GOING ON OUTSIDE THEIR LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRY

  8. iraqisax says:

It already has. Can you imagine the socialist programs like farm subsidies, food stamps, college “loans”, and corporate, as federal welfare as well as corporate welfare, without an income tax to pay for them?

    I agree with “doctor”.

maybe for you but ask a german if he likes paying over 60 percent of his wages in taxes or the other countries but step back so they will not slap the egg off your face

  11. oohhbother says:

Nope - It’s just the republicans trying to make us into idiots.

Our income tax has been progressive, and more sharply so, for most of the last century.

  12. bostonianinmo says:

We’ve had a progressive income tax since 1913. The income tax rates in the US have ALWAYS been higher for higher-income folks than for lower income folks. At the end of WWII the top bracket was over 90%! And as recently as 1969 it was 70%! The current top bracket is 35%. Obama is only proposing to restore the top bracket to the REAGAN level of 39% and raise the next lower bracket from 33% to 35%.

A taxpayer earning $ 350k per year is ONLY looking at a tax increase on the order of $ 2,000! That’s not going to break the bank of ANYONE at that lofty income level, NOR will it result in the loss of a SINGLE job if that taxpayer is a small business owner. The truth is that only about 2% of ALL small businesses earn over $ 250k in net profit for their owners, so ONLY that 2% is looking at ANY kind of tax increase at all. The remaining 98% will be looking at a tax DECREASE under Senator Obama’s plan.

Americans are actually aware that a progressive tax system is a tenet of socialism.
Most of the world’s Westernized countries have a progressive tax system and when their economies have a quarter as good as the one we’re having RIGHT NOW, they do a dance of joy. It’s just retarded to want our tax system to be any MORE like theirs than it already is. The few industrialized countries WITHOUT a Progressive tax system are growing apace even DURING this “global economic crisis.”

For people born this Summer and who have not read the Obama plan: The “Bush tax cuts” reduced rates across ALL brackets. According to Obama, those rates don’t count since they “expire.” EVERY cut he promises is based on the “pre-Bush” rates, so everyone NOW living in the 1990s gets tax relief. Raise your hand if you live in the 90s today. Great, YOU get a tax cut under Obama’s plan. No one else does. EVERYONE now living in 2008 gets their rates increased. Read his plan. It’s published on his site if he hasn’t hidden it yet.

In the Communist Manifesto Karl Marx outlined ten steps necessary for society to “throw off the shackles of oppression”. These are known as the ten planks of the Communist Manifesto. Guess what the second plank is? A heavily progressive or graduated income tax. This is merely a step, when the communist utopia is actually attained all will be equally taxed at 100%. But a progressive tax system is second only to the abolition of property in land and the application of all rents of land to public purposes in importance to a socialist state. Karl Marx himself said that a progressive tax system would help lead to socialism (a “temporary” stop on the road to communism). I think I’m going to take him at his word.

A progressive taxation system is a socialism spawned idea that has manifested in modern American politics by left wing politicians. Progressive taxation is a model that looks good on paper but consistently fails at it’s purpose in society and drives economy down.

Progressive taxaton crosses the barrier into full blown socialism when purposful progressive taxation is done to generate capital not for Federal needs but to provide services, money and resources to less fortunate or needy people. It’s federally mandated charity basically.

The problem to me isn’t the progressive taxation, it is the heavy handed taxation that is being imposed on businesses that will be hobbled by 50% tax rates on revenue in an economy that is suffering.

Socialism plays a part in America. FDR pushed it into America in the early 30′s during the early part of the depression when it had been identified as a “recession” FDR’s progressive taxation methods and government instituted wellfare (which is a socialist concept) drove the business sector into a full blown deep 8 year long depression. And seeing the same problems (virtually to a T) I don’t want America to make the exact same mistake. We need to use history as a guide and we are stumbling into the exact same mistake we made in the 30′s by ushering in a tax and spend democrat with heavy handed tax ideas which cost Americans painfully.
